Seating & Mobility Clinical Foundations: An Interdisciplinary Course Series
 
The Seating & Mobility Clinical Foundations series is a comprehensive, live Zoom-based professional development experience designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists, assistive technology professionals (ATPs), and rehabilitation team members involved in wheelchair evaluation, prescription, and follow-up care. This interdisciplinary series equips participants with the clinical reasoning, practical tools, and confidence needed to navigate the full continuum of seating and mobility, from foundational assessment to advanced, highly customized solutions.
 
Delivered by experienced clinicians and assistive technology professionals actively practicing in the field, this series blends evidence-based education with real-world application. Each course emphasizes how thoughtful seating and mobility decisions directly impact posture, skin integrity, safety, endurance, independence, and meaningful participation in daily life. Content is intentionally designed to bridge the gap between evaluation findings, equipment selection, and defensible documentation that supports medical necessity and funding approval.
 
Participants will begin by strengthening core evaluation skills, including the mat evaluation and interdisciplinary wheelchair clinic workflow, establishing a strong foundation for all subsequent clinical decision-making. The series then progresses through the full range of wheeled mobility options, including manual wheelchairs, power-assist technologies, tilt-in-space and recline systems, and power wheelchairs across Groups 1–5. Learners will gain clarity on clinical indications, functional capabilities, configuration options, and Medicare coverage considerations to ensure the right match between the client and the technology.
 
Advanced seating topics include in-depth exploration of cushions, backrests, and accessories, with a focus on pressure management, postural control, and functional performance. Participants will analyze pressure mapping data, compare material technologies, and learn how to synthesize evaluation findings into a cohesive and justifiable seating prescription. The series also addresses complex mobility needs through dedicated sessions on alternative drive controls and custom-molded seating, highlighting innovative solutions for individuals with significant motor, sensory, or postural challenges.
 
Throughout the series, learning is reinforced through case-based discussions, demonstrations, video examples, and interactive dialogue, allowing participants to immediately translate concepts into clinical practice. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary collaboration among therapists, ATPs, vendors, and caregivers, reflecting real-world wheelchair service delivery models.
