Learning outcome:
The participant will be able to identify the functional impact, medical management, impact on the family, and legal/ethical issues encountered when managing patients following a brain injury.
Objectives:
- Identify 5 systems of care available for persons with brain injury and assess funding challenges unique to this population
- Describe 5 rehabilitation philosophies that most effectively assist the brain injured patient
- Recognize 10 basic brain structures and functions and will be able to describe associated behaviors and challenges related to injury to those structures.
- Explain 4 factors that enhance or inhibit recovery of a person with brain injury and how those factors change with the aging process
- Demonstrate active treatment planning and its application for persons with brain injury
- Predict developmental issues for children and adolescents after brain injury and will understand the concept of individualized education planning and special education laws as they apply to these individuals.
- Examine the impact of brain injury on the family unit and identify methods for interacting and educating these families
- Describe 3 of the legal rights of persons receiving rehabilitation services as well as the ethical standards set for rehabilitation staff.
- Articulate the methods of neuroimaging, which support diagnostic and treatment decisions when a patient has sustained either a brain injury or spinal cord injury.
- Identify the 7 most common service model deliveries, articulate the extender model, and define the concept of person centered care.
To receive contact hours for this continuing education activity, the participant must:
- Attend entire course
- Complete the evaluation
Once successful completion has been verified, a “Certificate of Successful Completion” will be awarded for 15.5 contact hours.

Criteria for Course Completion
Licensed Medical Personnel are required to participate in discussion and presented activities, completed feedback form, sign in and sign out according to professional group’s oversight standards.
After the Review course
Participants may select to complete a proctored exam following course completion. To take the CBIS Exam, attendees should complete the ACBIS Application Procedure and pay the application fee directly to ACBIS. A passing score of 80% is required to obtain national credential of Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS).
