Course Description: This foundational 1.5-hour course is designed for occupational therapy, physical therapy practitioners, and assistive technology professionals seeking to enhance their clinical expertise in seating and mobility evaluation within a wheelchair clinic setting. Led by an interdisciplinary team consisting of an occupational therapist and an assistive technology professional (ATP), this session provides a comprehensive overview of the mat evaluation process and its critical role in guiding individualized wheelchair prescription. Attendees will explore the distinct yet complementary roles of the OT/PT and ATP in the evaluation and decision-making process, including documentation strategies and client-centered approaches to justification and funding.
Content will be delivered through didactic lecture, real-world case examples, and interactive discussions to illustrate best practices in setting up and running a successful wheelchair clinic. Attendees will leave with practical tools to improve interdisciplinary collaboration, enhance clinical outcomes, and advocate effectively for appropriate mobility equipment.
Learning Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze findings from a mat evaluation to determine their impact on wheelchair seating system selection and configuration.
- Differentiate the roles and responsibilities of the OT/PT practitioner and the assistive technology professional (ATP) during the wheelchair clinic process, including assessment, product selection, and justification.
- Interpret mat evaluation findings and apply them to seating system recommendations that optimize a client’s occupational performance and participation within their natural environments.
Assessment of Learning Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Question and answer, course feedback form.
