Course Description: In spite of the best treatment available, 30-50% of stroke survivors are left with significant physical and/or psychologic disabilities and consequent decline in quality of life. There are marked inconsistencies in quality of care and rehabilitation services. This course will focus on the latest research for rehabilitation and recovery paradigms for those with long-lasting effects of stroke. Specific areas that will be addressed during the activity are:
• Prediction and prognostication of stroke recovery, neuroplasticity, and neuromodulation
• Innovation in stroke care and recovery, rehabilitation technology, spasticity
• Understanding the clinical heterogeneity among stroke patients and utilizing large data across systems of stroke care to understand stroke outcomes for all stroke patients. The most recent developments in the field will be presented and will focus on the incorporation and implementation of these advances into practice, both in terms of clinical care and program development.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Appraise current research and literature related to stroke recovery and rehabilitation to focus on advancing clinical practice and program development.
2. Identify multidisciplinary approaches for the care of stroke survivors for improved client treatment intervention and outcomes.
3. Summarize rehabilitation concepts and interventions in rehabilitation programs for stroke survivors to improve the effects of clinical care and treatments.
Course Description for 12-1PM Virtual Lecture (PT, OT, SLP): The current model of stroke care delivery in the United States and in many parts of the world is fragmented, resulting in lack of continuity of care, inability to track recovery meaningfully across the continuum, and lack of access to the frequency, intensity, and duration of high-quality rehabilitation necessary to optimally harness recovery processes. The process of recovery itself has been overshadowed by a focus on length of stay and the movement of patients across levels of care. Here, we describe the rationale behind the efforts to define and coordinate an intensive, strategic effort to develop effective stroke systems of care across the continuum through the development of a unified Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute model of recovery and rehabilitation.
Learning Objectives (PT, OT, SLP) : Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the major gaps in stroke care.
2. Discuss the Sheikh Khalifa Stroke Institute Model of Recovery and Rehabilitation which includes a model of care, levels of care, framework for outcome measurement, algorithms and rehabilitation, and dissemination of information through learning networks.
3. Explain how to select and implement evidence-based assessment and treatment strategies in clinical practice to improve the quality of life.
Assessment of Leaning Objectives: Question and answer, course feedback form.
Instructional Methods Used: Lecture, Discussion, PowerPoint presentation, and Q&A
