Course Description:  The last decade has seen an explosion in our knowledge about Disorders of Consciousness (DoC). Recent advances have expanded our understanding of the neuroanatomical substrate of consciousness, enhanced our ability to more accurately detect consciousness, and identified a variety of potential treatment options. These developments culminated in the publication of national practice guidelines for this population. Despite these advances, the ability to provide clinical care for these patients has lagged behind. The challenge now is to translate and incorporate these findings to effectively meet the needs of these patients.

These lectures will address the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of early-on-illness and injury related to clients with potentially devastating brain injury.  Early withdrawal of treatment in early and later decision making for surrogate decision makers will be explored by discussing internal values, external values, and the window of opportunity in decision making. A shared discussion between the experts with bring the learner to consider the uncertainties of what clinicians, family members, and shared decision makers are forced to explore and how diagnostic techniques may assist in prognostication for these decisions.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
  1. Generalize 2 underlying assumptions of early withdrawal of life sustaining treatment in the acute care for those with a perceived devastating brain injury.
  2. Summarize how the understanding of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of consciousness assists in clinical prognostication for clients with a devastating brain injury and a DoC.
  3. Explain 2 key components for consideration when partaking in the uncertainty of decision making for clients with a devastating brain injury.
Assessment of Learning Objectives:  Passing score on post test of 80% or better and completion of course feedback form.

Instructional Methods Used:  Pre-recorded lectures and post-course quiz
