Course Description:This course is intended to be an introductory course on pediatric (ages birth- adolescent) feeding problems typically seen in the outpatient setting. The course will include typical development of feeding milestones up to age 6 years old; as well as, atypical presentations associated with various feeding issues starting at bottle feeding and leading up to picky eating in the older child. Clinicians learn best practices in completion of a comprehensive evaluation in infants and children with pediatric feeding disorders including children with oral motor dysfunction, sensory and behavioral challenges secondary to a variety of conditions including neurological, developmental, and medical conditions. Clinicians will leave with a variety of tools and strategies for feeding intervention to support patients and their caregiver.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify 3 components of a thorough pediatric feeding evaluation in the medically complex population.
- Explain 3 appropriate treatment strategies for management of infant feeding disorder about bottle-feeding. .
- Explain 3 appropriate treatment methodologies for management of pediatric feeding disorder in the medically complex population.
- Discuss minimum of 3 findings at a feeding evaluation that may warrant a referral for diagnostic procedures such as video fluoroscopic swallowing study and FEES.
- Identify 3 ways to improve postural alignment and/or positioning during feeding sessions in therapy and at home.
