The "Boomer" population of as of 2019 was approximately 71.6 million. They represent the age group 55 to 73. The "boomers" along with the 65.2 million Generation X'ers (age range of 39 - 54) are wanting to remain healthy and active as they age. There are considerations regarding diet and exercises that rehabilitation professionals should understand and utilize when working with these populations. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal injury and the most common cause of nonfatal trauma-related hospital admissions among older adults. There are more than 2.8 million fall related injuries treated in emergency departments annually, including over 800,000 hospitalizations and more than 27,000 deaths. Fall prevention must be addressed with this age group. Exercises and activities to improve strength and balance are imperative in preventing falls. All disciplines working with patients will often encounter symptoms that negatively impact the patient’s health and ability to improve their health outcomes. This presentation will also provide therapists with information concerning specific vitamins/minerals of concern, goals for protein, sugar and sodium intake, and the role of hydration and a healthy eating pattern, which they may utilize when observing possible nutrition-related issues as they are caring for patients. Correcting nutritional concerns which negatively affect one’s ability to perform tasks required will help in ensuring their patients are able to meet their therapy goals. This course will address the above and highlight other common areas of care including addressing comorbidities in the aging population (cancer, osteoporosis, neurologic deficits, diabetes, etc.).
