Course Description:

The focus of this course is to provide an in-depth examination of Multiple Sclerosis throughout the disease continuum, across various treatment settings, including acute care, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, home health, and end of life decision-making within a multidisciplinary context. Topics will include medical management, rehabilitation assessment and treatment recommendations, cognition and fatigue management related to Multiple Sclerosis, new technology-based treatment options, Multiple Sclerosis related dysphagia assessment and treatment, and community resources. Topics will include the nature and disease course of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and its rehabilitation implications, role of rehabilitation specialists, neuroscience concepts related to MS, and clinical decision-making framework as they apply to best practice in MS rehabilitation. The course format will include lecture-based presentation, case studies, and active dialogue and discussions.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Correlate the nature and disease course of Multiple Sclerosis and emerging medical treatments with rehabilitation implications for clients.
Implement new therapeutic technology and techniques, such as blood flow restriction, for the rehabilitation and management of Multiple Sclerosis patients.
Distinguish key components of vision screening appropriate for clients with Multiple Sclerosis and prioritize appropriate treatments for visual impairments.
Implement evidenced-based exercise prescription for the Multiple Sclerosis population to reduce fatigue and improve participation in ADL/IADL.
Structure interdisciplinary treatment plans for clients Multiple Sclerosis across the care continuum and across disciplines.
