Course Description:

The focus of this course is to provide the foundation from which rehabilitation specialists managing patients with Neurodegenerative Diseases can develop a clinical framework to effectively manage patients with neurodegenerative disease, including Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Huntington’s disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Post-Polio Syndrome, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS), Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), among others.

Topics will include the nature and disease course of neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) and its rehabilitation implications, role of rehabilitation specialists, pathophysiology of different neurodegenerative diseases, neuroscience concepts related to neurodegenerative diseases and clinical decision-making framework as they apply to best practice in rehabilitation. In addition, knowledge translation of evidence-based practice will be addressed. The course format will include lecture-based presentation and active dialogue with case studies and discussions.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1.   Describe the nature and disease course of neurodegenerative diseases and its rehabilitation implications to colleagues and clients.
2.   Discuss the role of the rehabilitation specialist in the management of patients with neurodegenerative disease to colleagues and clients.
3.   Describe recommended standardized outcome measures for the different neurodegenerative diseases across the care continuum across disciplines.
4.   Discuss interdisciplinary treatment plans for clients with different neurodegenerative diseases across the care continuum across disciplines.

Additional Occupational Therapy specific Learning Outcome:

Discuss two common considerations for wheelchair seating that affect the use of a communication device for a client’s independence in self-care needs when living with a neurodegenerative disease.
