Course Description:
The Advancing Clinical Practice in Spinal Cord Injury course will present best practices and practical insights from which clinicians can develop a clinical framework to treat persons with spinal cord injury or disease. Spinal cord medicine is a subspecialty for clinicians who practice in neurological and rehabilitation settings. This course format will include lecture-based presentations, video case presentations, lab experience, and interactive dialogue.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Investigate five web-based resources available to assist people with spinal cord injury.
Articulate three clinical interventions to optimize bed mobility, transfers, and Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for improved function in patients with spinal cord injury.
Investigate three considerations for adjustment to spinal cord injury (SCI), SCI mental health, SCI and pain as related to their treatment interventions.
Practice two airway clearance techniques and perform instruction for three self-assist cough techniques as demonstrated during instructor guided lab.
Examine the benefits of two specialized splints used for clients with a spinal cord injury/disease.
Explain three advanced wheelchair skills needed for clients with spinal cord injury/disease.
Assessment of Learning Objectives
: Participation in lab wtih feedback from instructors, question & answer, discussion, and electronic feedback form.
