Course Description:
A person who has a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) may have long-term problems affecting body structures and functions such as thinking, memory, movement, coordination, speech, swallowing, vision, activities of daily living, and emotions. As every brain injury and every person are different, physical medicine and rehabilitation professionals need a wide variety of knowledge and skills to treat these clients throughout necessary episodes of care. This course will focus on foundational knowledge and clinical treatments related to a variety of topics common for clients with a TBI.
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will:
1. Analyze current medical and research trends focused on rehabilitation needs for those with a TBI.
2. Summarize current treatment practices for Upper Motor Neuron Syndrome (UMNS).
3. Practice 2 neurobehavioral techniques to aide a client’s participation in rehabilitation programs.
4. Appraise 2 treatment interventions for clients with TBI to aide their client’s participation in rehabilitation programs.

5. Predict how deficits identified in the cranial nerve exam and/or oral motor exam impact swallowing function.
6. Interpret instrumental swallow studies utilizing case studies to determine possible plans of care and how comorbidities impact patient outcomes.
