Course Description:
Sexual health problems are prevalent among people with a chronic illness and/or injury. Sexual health in the rehabilitation setting is a growing topic of interest and integrating sexual health in the overall care for rehabilitation patients has proven to be a challenge. This course will address the overarching view of sexuality in the United States, sexual health and physical medicine and rehabilitation teams approach for clients with a brain injury (BI) or a spinal cord injury (SCI). The importance of culture, its impact, and practicing cultural humility are discussed in this complex discussion.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Relate the history of the study of sexuality in the United States.
Summarize where to locate resources, research and best practices for sexual health in rehabilitation.
Describe common sexual problems after brain injury (BI) and potential causes.
Explain two ways to integrate assessment and discussion of sexuality into rehabilitation after BI.
Examine how current research can change how we discuss sexuality with clients who have spinal cord injury (SCI).
Illustrate what is important to individuals living with a SCI related to their romantic relationships, intimacy, and sexuality through research and best practices.
Identify the role that culture plays in perceptions of sexual (dys)function when working with clients in rehabilitation settings.
Examine the perceptions of individual culture and dominant culture and its impact on health outcomes of medical rehabilitation clients.
Apply cultural humility principles when working with medical rehabilitation clients and addressing their sexual health needs.
