Course Description:  The last decade has seen an explosion in our knowledge about Disorders of Consciousness (DoC). Recent advances have expanded our understanding of the neuroanatomical substrate of consciousness, enhanced our ability to more accurately detect consciousness, and identified a variety of potential treatment options. These developments culminated in the publication of national practice guidelines for this population. Despite these advances, the ability to provide clinical care for these patients has lagged behind. The challenge now is to translate and incorporate these findings to effectively meet the needs of these patients.

These lectures will introduce the most recent knowledge related to: 1) program implementation recommendations for treating clients with a DoC, 2) access and advocacy issues when implementing a program for treating clients with a DoC, 3) use of the CRS-R sub-scales, and 4) development and use of IQBA protocols.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
  1. Implement 3 overarching guidelines for administering and scoring the CRS-R based on the video presentations, discussion, case examples, and recorded questions.
  2. Apply 3 key concepts for developing an IQBA protocol for a specific patient as part of a collaborative treatment team based on the video presentations, discussion, case examples, and recorded questions.
  3. Explain 3 processes of getting support and delivering services for clients with a DoC, considering obstacles and ways others have overcome these access and advocacy issues.
  4. Illustrate 3 key recommendations for programs that provide services to those with a DoC based on the CPG for treating those with a DoC.
Assessment of Learning Objectives:  Passing score on post test of 80% or better and completion of course feedback form.

Instructional Methods Used:  Pre-recorded lectures and post-course quiz
