Course Description:  The last decade has seen an explosion in our knowledge about Disorders of Consciousness (DoC). Recent advances have expanded our understanding of the neuroanatomical substrate of consciousness, enhanced our ability to more accurately detect consciousness, and identified a variety of potential treatment options. These developments culminated in the publication of national practice guidelines for this population. Despite these advances, the ability to provide clinical care for these patients has lagged behind. The challenge now is to translate and incorporate these findings to effectively meet the needs of these patients.

These lectures discuss the current understanding of clients with covert consciousness/unrecognized alert state, the available neuroimaging technologies to test for covert consciousness, and future technology advances to assist clients in this state. This research has implications on future translation of science for patient’s ability to be diagnosed with consciousness and to communicate when living in a disorder of consciousness through the use of technology.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:
  1. Summarize covert consciousness/cognitive motor disassociation and the use of brain/computer interfaces.
  2. Explain the current technologies and decision making available for diagnosing clients who may be in a state of “covert consciousness”.
  3. Generalize current understanding of clinical topics when working with clients who are living with covert consciousness.
Assessment of Learning Objectives:  Passing score on post test of 80% or better and completion of course feedback form.

Instructional Methods Used:  Pre-recorded lectures and post-course quiz
